Kunte earns GM norm, Sasi still in race
Abhijit Kunte of India has moved closer to his Grandmaster title by securing his second GM norm in the Indian Independence Golden Jubilee GM Chess Tournament yesterday. He needed only 10 moves and five minutes with the black pieces to get a draw from K Murugan in the ninth round and reach six points, the requirement for a nine-round Swiss norm from a round robin affair of category 10 status.

Indians caught in MacGill's spin
Stuart MacGill believes that he is as fast as Anil Kumble. He is also pretty sure that he can spin the ball as much as Shane Warne. But it was just that the 27-year-old leg-spinner from New South Wales never really got the chance to get the message across. But after Warne decided to take the first big break on this Indian tour, this `reserve' tweaker finally got a chance to exhibit an interesting brand of leg-spin.

Injury halts Graf's progress
Steffi Graf's comeback took a painful detour last night when a left hamstring strain forced her to quit her match against Lindsay Davenport for a place in the final of the $ 1.25-million Evert CupAmerican Davenport, the second seed, got the semi-final win 6-4, 4-6, 4-2. Graf was playing in only her second event since coming back from 1997 knee surgery which kept her out for most of last year.

Ramprakash rescues England
Mark Ramprakash hit his maiden Test century as England continued to battle their way right back into the fifth Test against West Indies at Kensington Oval. With left-hander Graham Thorpe supporting him with an unbeaten 84, England denied West Indies a wicket in the morning session to reach 292 for five at lunch.
