MUMBAI, March 16: Senior Inspector of Police (Matunga), Netaji Tambavekar, today denied having seen a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) circular on steps to be taken by the police in the event of encounter with gangsters.Deposing before the Enquiry into Encounters Commission, Tambavekar told NHRC counsel P M Pradhan that he knew nothing about the circular, dated March 29, 1997.
Tambavekar, who was then attached to the Criminal Intelligence Unit as Senior PI and was in charge of operations when Javed Fawda was killed in a police encounter, said a private car and government car were used in the operation. The spot where Fawda got down from his car was about 10 feet from his own car, he said.
He said he had received a tip-off that Fawda was wanted by Dharavi, Kurla and Dadar police, but he did not go to any of the stations nor did he inform his superiors. During the examination-in-chief by Mumbai police counsel Shrikant Bhat, Tamabvekar said he did not receive any information on Fawda's address oron his relatives. He said he had directed his officers to collect information about Fawda's associates, and on September 2, 1997, he was informed by an officer that Fawda's body was claimed by his sister.
