THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 16: The Congress-led opposition in the Kerala assembly today staged a walk-out following the Speaker's refusal to admit an adjournment motion on the attack on the Chittar police station allegedly by the Marxists, on March 8.Opposing the admissibility of the motion, sought to be moved by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan (Congress), Nayanar said the police had arrested 22 people in connection with the assault on two police constables in the police station. He described as baseless, reports that Marxist wrokers were involved in the attack.
He said CPI (M) local committee secretary A S Rajendran was roughed up by the police when he went to the police station to mediate in a dispute. Following this, constables Rajan and Chandrasekharan Nair were manhandled by a group of people at Vadasserrikara. They were being treated in the Pathanamthitta general hospital. Nayanar said it was unfortunate that the opposition was trying to make political capital by blowing out of proportion a dispute between police constables and the people of Chittar area.
Nayanar said the government would extend protection to policemen and government officials to discharge their duties. Strong action would be taken, irrespective of political leanings, against those who prevent government servants from discharging their duties. Strong action would also be taken against government servants for dereliction of duty, he added.
