Mixed trend on bourses

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU
MUMBAI, March 19: Pivotals generally showed a mixed trend on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today. Resuming better, led by multinational shares attracted fresh buying by foreign funds. Several heavy-weighted scrips came under profit taking towards end. The closing rates showed small to modest changes. The volume of business remained moderate.

The BSE sensitive index declined from the intra-day high of 3852.42 to finish at 3820.87 with a minor loss of 4.15 points compared to the previous level of 3825.02. The BSE-100 index was fractionally down at 1655.14 from previous close of 1655.77.

Brokers said that the FIIs picked up sizeable quantity of stocks of German Remedies, Glaxo, Nestle and Britannia. However, the local operators were booking profit in a bid to square off their outstanding positions during the last half hour of the trading in view of end-account considerations.

Marketmen were eagerly awaiting the portfolio allocations in the new BJP-led government at the centre. ITC remained the mostactive scrip with a turnover of Rs 282.78 crore of the total volume of business of Rs 943.43 crore.

On the NSE, pivotals advanced further on good support from domestic institutions but reduced the margins on profit-taking at higher levels and closed with modest gains. The NSE-50 index opened at 1103.80 surged up to a high of 1113.45 and closed at 1105.80, trimming the gains to 2.45 points over the previous close of 1103.35. The Midcap closed at 1284.90, showing a gain of 8.55 over the previous close of 1276.35. The total volume today was Rs 1,415.10 crore.
