  Indian batting gladiators dig into Australian bowling for run feast
Australia's summer of discontent suffered another blow yesterday as their bowling inadequacies lay exposed. In a gladiatorial show of strength on Day Two of the second Test, Indian batsmen pulped the Australian attack before 90,000 spectators at the Eden Garden.
  Mike Atherton's captaincy on line
The controversial 52-Test reign of Mike Atherton as England captain hangs in the balance as the sixth and final Test with the West Indies gets underway at St Johns (Antigua) tomorrow. Win and Atherton will probably stay. Lose and he will probably go.

Cullinan canes Lankan attack
Daryll Cullinan resurrected his faltering Test career with a sparkling century as South Africa scored 298 for six on the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Newlands yesterday. Cullinan, who had not reached 50 in his previous eight Tests, hit 113 off 160 balls.
Mukesh mesmerises Pakistan
A Searing run down the right, then a flick from an acute angle over the advancing goal-keeper, which landed neatly into the far left corner of the Pakistan net. Mukesh Kumar, the magician, had done the trick to conjure up an Indian victory that left the opponents mesmerised at the National Stadium.

Dempo 'keeper Salim Ansari's lapse helped title aspirants Mohun Bagan rally to hold Dempo 2-2 in an exciting match of the Philips National Football League yesterday.
