PMO plays down FM row
To check the negative publicity over the Jaswant Singh episode, the BJP swiftly launched damage control measures on Friday with the Prime Minister's Office, RSS and party leaders acting in tandem to put a rest to the controversy. The PMO issued a statement this evening denying reports that outside influence had been exerted on the allocation of the Finance and Commerce portfolios.

Govt's electronic policy finds a `compere' in Sushma
Taking over as Union information and broadcasting minister for the second time in two years, Sushma Swaraj said "correct information and quality broadcasting will be the guiding principles of our media policy,". In attendance were all senior officers whom Swaraj met for a detailed discussion on the Prasar Bharati ordinance later in the day.

BJD gives Centre one year to act
Leader of the Oppn in the Orissa House, Ramakrushna Patnaik, has announced that the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) would review its stand vis-a-vis the BJP if its conditions for extending support to its government at the Centre were not fulfilled within a year. Patnaik said that the BJD's single point agenda was declaration of Orissa as a special category state.

Gujarat Govt to review annual plan
Vajubhai Vala, Gujarat Finance Minister, on Friday presented in the state Assembly budget estimates for 1998-99 for taking vote on account, showing a surplus of Rs 263.80 crore on account of net transactions. Presenting the budget estimates in the House, Vala said the vote on account was for a period of four months from April 1 to July 31.
