  Moopanar may return to Cong
Chances of the return of a politician to the Congress after Sonia Gandhi became party president have brightened following Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) chief GK Moopanar's announcement that he would "consider rejoining" the party. Moopanar said this in Chennai after announcing his decision to quit the TMC presidency owning moral responsibility for the party's poor showing in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
  Naidu not to join Govt
Stung by the resignation of his Industries Minister over support to the BJP, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu has categorically ruled out the possibility of joining the Vajpayee Government. Naidu also allayed fears among Muslim minorities over the party's support to the BJP Government during the trust vote.

JCT-Polysindo deal on the rocks
In a new twist to the JCT-Polysindo deal, the Indonesian company has accused JCT of going back on its earlier commitment on the price for its synthetic fibre division. JCT said that Polysindo of Indonesia was keen on completing the transaction but JCT has suddenly raised objections on the valuation of the business and has sought an additional Rs 100 crore for the divestment.
Mamata wants BJP alliance for panchayat polls
Mamata Banerjee's formal invitation to state Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, to join the Bangla Bachao Front (BBF) for the coming panchayat election, indicates that both partners are willing to take an early decision on the issue. Mamata has already asked the leaders of her new organisation to prepare for the panchayat polls slated for May 31.

DoT panel to solve licence row
A high-level empowered committee has been set up by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to decide cases of telecom services licences where licensee companies have asked for reliefs or where there are ambiguities in the interpretation of the clauses in the licence agreement itself. The decision to set up this committee was arrived at a meeting of the Telecom Commission held last week.
Cronje clobbers Lanka into submission
South African captain Hansie Cronje slammed the second fastest fifty in Test history to propel his side to a six-wicket victory on the fourth day of the second and final cricket Test against Sri Lanka yesterday. Cronje reached his half-century off 31 balls and went on to make 82 off 62 balls before getting out when South Africa were just 13 runs short of their target of 228. The victory gave South Africa a 2-0 win in the two-match series.
