Cronje clobbers Lanka into submission
South African captain Hansie Cronje slammed the second fastest fifty in Test history to propel his side to a six-wicket victory on the fourth day of the second and final cricket Test against Sri Lanka yesterday. Cronje reached his half-century off 31 balls and went on to make 82 off 62 balls before getting out when South Africa were just 13 runs short of their target of 228. The victory gave South Africa a 2-0 win in the two-match series.

Rios ends Sampras' reign
Marcelo Rios of Chile captured the world No 1 ranking here with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Andre Agassi in the final of the Lipton tennis championships. Rios ended American Pete Sampras' 102-week reign at the top on Monday while claiming a victory which made him the first South American, the sixth-youngest man and the fourth left-hander to hold the No 1 ranking.

Lara ton fails to ward off defeat
Left-hander Nick Knight hit a superb 122 as England beat the West Indies by 16 runs in a high-scoring One-Day cricket international on Sunday. The win came despite a century by West Indies captain Brian Lara. Knight and Alec Stewart (74) shared an opening stand of 165 that lifted England to a formidable 293 for five off 50 overs. The West Indies, in reply, were bowled out for 277 off 46.5 overs.

Pak agree to Test series in India
The Pakistan Cricket Board has finally agreed to play a three-Test series in India and will start the overdue tour here from January 16, 1999, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jaywant Lele announced at the Programme and Fixture Committee meeting yesterday. It will be Pakistan's first full tour of India in the last 12 years.
