Emphatic win for South Africa

ASSOCIATED PRESS
DURBAN, April 4: Jonty Rhodes and Jacques Kallis combined for a 183-run fifth wicket partnership to lead South Africa to an easy 52-run victory over Pakistan in their one-day cricket match yesterday.

In the first match of the one-day triangular series also featuring Sri Lanka, the home side batted first and set an imposing target of 280 for four in its allotted 50 overs.

Then the South African bowlers tore through the Pakistan batting, limiting the visitors to 228 all out in 47.4 overs for the 52-run margin.

Rhodes, 94 not out, and Kallis, 109 not out, both survived close calls in setting the South African record for a fifth-wicket total. The previous record of 131 was held by Rhodes and captain Hansie Cronje.

Chasing an improbable target, Pakistan was reduced to 75 for seven as debut new ball bowlers Steve Elworthy and Roger Telemachus grabbed two wickets each.

Late heroics from Wasim Akram (27) and Moin Khan (45) added 53 runs for the eight wicket, and then Waqar Younis (33) and Abdul Razzaq (46n.o.) blasted a Pakistani record 10th wicket partnership of 72 to make the final score respectable.
