Baskaran optimistic

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, April 4: Young forward Rajiv Mishra was fast recovering after a knee orthroscopy on his left knee here on March 21 and the National hockey player has been advised physiotherapy and mild exercise by his doctor.

Mishra, who missed the Test series against Pakistan last month due to the injury, has been asked to do mild jogging by his orthopaedic surgeon Ashok Rajagopal, but the team management was cautious in not pushing things, according to chief national hockey coach Vasudevan Baskaran.

"He has been asked to begin jogging. But we are against hurrying up things. Team doctor Cruz will supervise his regimen once we return from Australia by April 20," he said.

Mishra, who was the top goal-scorer during the junior World Cup in Milton Keynes last year, was a key player in India's scheme of things for the World Cup, he added.

The Indian team bound for the twin tournaments in Australia from April 9 to 19 underwent light training and a practice match against a CRPF team at the National stadium thisevening.

"The postponement by 10 days of the Pakistan leg of the Test series and the unexpected injuries to forward Dhanraj Pillay, Samir Dad and Mishra was a setback to our build-up," he said, adding that the Australian tournament would prove invaluable in the final phase of build-up. "We will have a good pool of about 30 players, at least two per position, in the final camp to choose the final 16."

Assessing the team's prospects "Down Under", Baskaran was confident of a good show with the "new look" side. A pleasant weather notwithstanding, the boys should be able to give off their best, he said.
