Ten villagers sentenced to life imprisonment for murder

THANE, APRIL 4: Ten villagers from Anjurgaon village of Bhiwandi taluka in Thane district, who were tried in the infamous Anjur murder case, were found guilty and sentenced today to life imprisonment by Thane Additional Sessions Judge K D Patil.

The judge who relied on the prosecution story also fined each of the accused Rs 1,000 and in default sentenced them to additional two months rigorous imprisonment.

The accused who were tried and found guilty on the charges of murder were Manish Chintaman Tare, 28, Kamlakar Chhagan Tare, 28, Laxman Gopal Tare, 35, Bandu Narayan Tare 23, Yogesh Maruti Manera, 21, Madhukar Jagganath Tare, 24, Navnath Bhaghirath Mhatre 24, Nalya alias Sudhakar Baliram Patil, 28, Vishwanath Somnath Gharat, 28 and Motu Pandu Tare, 27. The prosecution told the court that on June 19, 1996 the accused persons formed an unlawful assembly between the villages Mankoli and Anjurgaon and murdered Krishna Kanga Tare by attacking him with deadly weapons, choppers, swords etc. One of the accusedalso fired at Tare with his revolver, it was stated. The accused persons were also charged with rioting and attempt to murder another person Manohar Ananta Manera.

According to the prosecution, informant Sanjay Tare is the nephew of the deceased Krishna Manga Tare. The accused, the deceased and the witnesses were all residents of Anjurgaon village in Bhiwandi taluka. According to the prosecution, Janardhan Tare, relative of some of the accused persons, was murdered in December 1993. Krishna Tare, Manohar Manera and nine others were tried in the case and were later acquitted by the court on May 20, 1996. The accused persons felt a sense of ill-will towards Krishna and others.

On June 18, 1996, Krishna Tare, Sanjay Tare, Gula and Manohar Manera went to Ulva village to see a country craft. They borrowed an Ambassador car belonging to Parshuram Tawre and went to the village to meet Kashinath Seth.

As they could not meet him, they returned to Anjurgaon. As they were proceeding towards Anjurgaon, two of theaccused overtook them on a scooter.When their car was passing near the village Mankoli one white Trax car came and stood before their car and the accused persons got down from it and smashed the window screen of the car. Later when the inmates of the car got down, the accused attacked them.
