Sports Authority of India's selection trials from April 22

Sports Authority of India, Western Centre will be organising selection trials for talented sportspersons in the age-group 14-19 years (as on 1/1/98) in various disciplines for its training centre. The selection programme is as follows:

  • On 21st&22nd April for athletics, basketball & volleyball at Sai Training Centre (STC), Barakutullah Khan Stadium, Jodhpur.
  • On 24th&25th April for athletics, hockey & wrestling at STC, Akurli Road, Kandivali (E), Mumbai.
  • On 27th&28th April for athletics, football & boxing at STC, Pt. JN Stadium, Fatorda, Margao.
  • On 30th April & 1st May for athletics, swimming, basketball, football, hockey, handball, kabbadi & wrestling.

    The selections for STC Alwar will be carried out at Jodhpur while the trials for STC Devgadh Baria will be held at Gandhinagar.

    All sportspersons who have secured first three places in state/national/international competitions are eligible for selections.Aspirants have to appear at their own cost bringing the original testimonials in support of age, education and sports achievements.

    On selection the sportsperson will be provided with free coaching, boarding, lodging, competition exposure, limited sports kit, medical and insurance cover ar per SAI norms will also be provided, a press release said.

    Bandra Gymkhana tournaments

    The Bandra Gymkhana will be conducting an Open Amateur volleyball Tournament on its floodlit courts from April 20-24, 1998. Players who have participated at University, District, State or National level are not allowed to participate in the event.

    Cash prizes of Rs 5,000 for winners, Rs 3,000 for runners-up, Rs 1,500 for hardline winners and Rs 500 for hardline losers will be awarded. Entries will be accepted at the Gymkhana office, 42, St Andrews Road, Bandra (W) upto April 13 (Tel: 642 3521/ 642 8512).

    The GBandra Gymkhana Open Instant Throwball Tournament for girls and ladies will be held on April 28 at the Gymkhanacourts. Entries will be accepted latest bt April 20 at the Gymkhana office.

    Cricket coaching camps

    Former Mumbai Ranji player, Sanjay Jaywant will be conducting a cricket coaching camp for the age group 10-17 years at Dadar Parsi Colony, opp Ruia College, Matunga from April 13 - May 31, 1998 from 7-9 a.m. For details contact 628 1908

    A cricket coaching camp for under-15 youngesters will be conducted by former Test player Eknath Solkar at the Parsee Gymkhana from April 20- May 20. For more details contact Ramesh on tel: 281 2126.
