Fernandes in favour of unconditional talks in N-E

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
SHILLONG, April 6: Defence Minister George Fernandes said today that feelers had been sent to outlawed insurgents of north-eastern region for attending peace talks.

Reiterating the Centre's offer for talks, he said there would not be any precondition for such an exercise. He said the talks with the National Students Council of Nagaland would go on. Only through negotiations could the problem be solved as ``they are our own children'' who have been fighting against their own States.

When pointed out that ongoing army operations in Meghalaya had not had much success, Fernandes said ``success or failure is not important. People should get the right message and understand the problem.''

He said that after assessing the situation he would brief the Prime Minister and the Home Minister.
