Marsh said the elevation of Steve Waugh to lead Australia's one-day side at Taylor's expense last December marked "an era finished".

The decision left Australia with two captains for the different forms of the game, a solution Marsh believes could be temporary.p"We've got to move on and find the right captain, if we're going to have one captain," Marsh was quoted as saying in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper today. "The selectors might wait another 12 months before deciding who that is," Marsh said.

But, in Marsh's view, Taylor would not be a candidate to lead both sides beause he has no future as a batsman in international limited-overs cricket.Taylor was dropped before the start of the World Series One-Day competition on home soil against New Zealand and South Africa.

Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist took his place as opener.

"Thedisappointing thing is that Mark Taylor has been dropped, and I understand how he feels," said Marsh, a former Test opener.

"We have to sort that problem out, because he won't play one-day cricket again," Marsh said. "Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh will open the batting for Australia."

Under Taylor's leadership, Australia lost 1-2 in a three-Test series against India last month.
