Khalsa, Sachivalaya Gym lift titles

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
April 7: Anil Fernandes's field goal in the dying minutes enabled Khalsa XI lift the Bombay Hockey Association (BHA) Third Division title with a 2-1 win over Village Amboli at the Mahindra Stadium, today.

Playing Bombay Republicans `C' in the Fourth Division final, Sachivalaya Gymkhana clinched the title with Benny Zuzarte's opportunistic strike in the first half.

Khalsa XI took the lead in the 19th minute through Avinash Sawant but the scores were level a mere four minutes later. Prominent striker Joshua Lacroix found the net for Village Amboli to take the teams into the second half on level terms.

Both sides endeavoured to gain the upper hand after the breather and lively, fast-paced hockey followed. The scores remained level till a six minutes before the final hooter when Anil Fernandes scored a splendid field goal for Khalsa.

Zuzarte's all-important goal, coming in the 16th minute, punished defender Nicholas D'Souza's failure to clear amid a goalmouth melee. The lone goal also stopped a fine runby the Republican youngsters who surpassed all expectations to enter the title round.

The goal spurred Republicans `C' into action and the young side attempted to restore parity with a series of attacks. Much as they tried, Republicans' forwards Juned Jada, Mahesh Lokhande and semi-final hero Niel Miranda failed to recapture the magic of previous encounters.

Prodigality did not help the youngsters' cause as chance after chance went abegging. The Third Division winners, Khalsa XI, received Rs 10,000 with runners-up Village Amboli collecting Rs 5,000. Sachivalaya Gymkhana picked up Rs 8,000 as Fourth Division champions leaving Bombay Republicans `C' with Rs 4,000 as second-placed team.
