MUMBAI, April 7: In two separate incidents of robbery today, one of them on the busy Kalanagar flyover at Bandra, a total of Rs 40 lakh were looted by armed robbers by employing a similar modus operandi.In both cases, vehicles were intercepted, their windshields smashed and weapons brandished before doing away with the booty.
Four men in a red Maruti 1000 intercepted a Fiat on Kalanagar flyover at around 1.20 pm, and alighting from their vehicle, set about smashing the Fiat's windshield with choppers, police informed. The robbers threatened those inside the car to part with the keys of the bag in which the cash had been kept, and finished their job in less than five minutes, police said.
Gurunath Kurudkar, one of those seated inside the Fiat, told police they had withdrawn Rs 14.3 lakh in cash from State Bank of India's (SBI) Dadar T T branch and were taking it to Gyanchand and Co's Vakola office. In the second incident, armed robbers struck when Rs 25 lakh was being taken in a taxi from SBI'sGoregoan branch to Bank of Baroda's Jogeshwari branch. The robbery took place near Jogeshwari station.
