Painter Golak Khandual is one of the few people who have opted out of the rat race. Though a trained architect, he has worked as a barber, a cook, a make-up man and a tracing paper salesman. All because he doesn't want to toe the line. "I'll do anything which involves honest labour but I won't work on soul killing jobs. I don't want to make endless rows of ugly buildings only because they will get me money." originally from Orissa, he studied architecture in Delhi and when he is not designing buildings, he takes up the brush or crayons in his spare time. His recent exhibition in Delhi, to his surprise, was a sell out.His works though are priced modestly between Rs 3,500 to Rs 7000, "just enough to be able to frame the larger works," he says. Painting for him is a way of expressing himself. His oddball itinerary also includes designing the sets and landscape for Arundhati Roy and Pradip Krishen's film Electric Moon.At the Prithvi Art Gallery, Juhu Church Road, till April 26, 1998.
