Punters go on rampage in Calcutta

MUMBAI, April 9: The extra race day slated for today was stopped abruptly in Calcutta after the fourth race as riots broke out when the favourite in The Romantic Dancer Handicap failed to perform well. Unfancied Solid Gold, ridden by R Ahmed, reaped an astronomical dividend of Rs 685 on a Rs 10 tote ticket. Following Solid Gold's win, the punters went on rampage and the stewards cancelled the remaining races.

The following are the results with dividends paid at Mahalakshmi and Pune.

RWITC meets Munde

  • The Royal Western India Turf Club Committee (RWITC) met deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde to discuss the problems faced by the club, particularly the enhanced betting tax from April 1.

    It is understood that the minister gave the committee a patient hearing and said the government is prepared to reconsider it's decision provided the Club authorities assure that the government will continue to get the revenue as per it's proposals.
