"Paes-Bhupathi ready for No 1 spot"

K Srinivasa Raghavan
CHENNAI, April 9: Some people are branded as doubles players despite being consistent in singles on the ATP tour. Australian Todd Woodbridge is one such, yet to get due recognition. Woodbridge, who has won 51 titles in doubles with Mark Woodforde, has become something of a legend.

Woodbridge has won two ATP singles titles and is in India for the second time. His earlier trip was for the Davis Cup semi-finals against India in Chandigarh. Excerpts from an interview:
Q What prompted you to come to this tournament?

A It is challenge for us to play Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi in front of their home crowd. This was the main reason for coming to Chennai.

Q What went wrong in your Davis Cup tie against Zimbabwe?

A I am extremely disappointed with the result. We did'nt have our top two players at a crucial time. Patrick Rafter pulled out with a virus. Mark Philippoussis did not play. (Mark) Woodforde found the sudden transition difficult and lost.

Q What about the Blackbrothers' performance in the Davis Cup?

A They played an excellent match. Byron Black is underrated, but he is one of the most consistent players on the Tour. He reached the ATP final in Delhi a few years ago. With this result, he will be recognised as one of the good players in the circuit.

Q You did well in Wimbledon last year...

A I was in good form at that time. Return of serve was the key. I returned serves well.

Do you think Paes and Bhupathi are ready to challenge you for the No 1 spot in doubles?

A Definitely. They have improved a lot in the last one year. I enjoy playing with them.

Q What do you think is the main reason for your enormous success in doubles?

A I would attribute our success to three reasons. 1 Communication. 2 Strength of return. 3 Follow really well.

Q What influence has Ray Ruffles (coach) had in your career growth?

A He has been coaching me since I was 14. He has been a big influence. John Newcombeand Fred Stolle also have helped me.

Q How do you rate 15-year-old Lleyton Hewitt, who won an ATP Tour event in '98?

A Well, he has potential. However, I would like to point out his title triumph has come a bit earlier than expected. Maybe in another two years, he might become a strong player.
