Blair meets Irish PM to salvage peace talks

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
LONDON, April 9: British Prime Minister Tony Blair held summit talks with his Irish counterpart Bertie Ahern last night in a desperate bid to salvage the new Irish peace deal after Ulster Unionists rejected the peace blueprint drawn by American mediator George Mitchell.

Blair was forced to airdash to northern Ireland as unionists described the peace blueprint, which has yet not been made public, as ``Sinn Fein wish list which they would not touch with a barge pole.'' The British prime minister decided to fly to Stormont Castle after David Trimble, the Unionist leader, telephoned him demanding ``radical concessions''.
