CALCUTTA, April 9: Pradip Gogoi, vice-chairman of the banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and one of its principal arms negotiator, was arrested here late on Wednesday night. This is a major setback for the militant group, coming as it does close on the heels of the arrest of its general secretary Anup Chetia in Dhaka recently. Chetia is facing trial in a Dhaka court.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate today remanded Gogoi to police custody till April 21.
Gogoi has been chargesheeted under five cases, including the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act.
When asked by journalists whether the ULFA was prepared for a dialogue with the Government, Gogoi said, ``No. It depends on so many things. Besides, I'm not the only member. There are others. As of now, no.''
Gogoi's arrest followed a tip-off from the Army's 4 Corps headquarters at Tezpur in Assam. He was picked up near New Market in central Calcutta by a team comprising Army and Calcutta policeofficers.
Gogoi had been involved in major arms deals on behalf of the ULFA. He was a `guest' in Islamabad from March, 1991 to December, 1991 for one such arms deal. He had also been involved in several cases of killings and bomb blasts in Assam.
The 33-year-old ULFA leader from Sibsagar district in Upper Assam was twice arrested before. In 1992 he was arrested in Guwahati but released on parole to facilitate the ULFA's talks with the Centre.
He jumped parole and went underground again. In June 1994 he was caught again from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) colony in Sibsagar. He was released on bail in 1996, but jumped the bail soon after.
