US moves China on Pol Pot trial

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BEIJING, April 11: United States has sought China's help in organising a war crimes trial for Pol Pot, who led Cambodia's notorious Khmer Rouge guerrilla outfit, a senior US official said. Pol Pot was blamed for the killing of about two million people. US Under Secretary of State Thomas R Pickering said he made the request to Chinese officials and they ``listened with interest'' but did not immediately respond to the request.

Pickering said they discussed, whether international tribunals might be appropriate for the trial of Pol Pot.``I left with the Chinese side our thoughts and concerns about the need for the development of such a tribunal and the hope that we can cooperate together in that effort,'' Pickering said.
