1 dead, 50 hurt as storm hits Midnapore again

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CALCUTTA, April 12: Even before Midnapore could begin convalescing from the effects of the tornado which left over 50 dead and hundreds injured last month, a fierce hailstorm accompanied by lightening lashed the Sabong block affecting a large number of villages.

The hailstorm, which hit the Sabang block of Midnapore district on Saturday evening, destroyed over 300 mud huts, uprooted trees, communication lines, leaving over 50 people injured and one dead.

The reports reaching here said, in the evening yesterday, a fierce gale accompanied by hailstorm, lightening and rain lashed several villages in the Sahong block.

The people, who are still reeling under the impact of tornado, panicked as the cloud and storm rained them with hailstones weighing over 500 grams!

Incidentally, the hailstorm also disrupted the relief work for the tornado-hit villagers in Daton, Egra and the villages which were almost destroyed by the twister that hit Midnapore recently.
