  Bharat Ratna given to CS
Eighty eight-year-old eminent statesman C Subramaniam was yesterday given the Bharat Ratna - the highest civilian award. Dr Subramaniam, considered the father of Green Revolution in India, received the award from President KR Narayanan at an impressive investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  US won't hound Pak on Ghauri
The United States has ruled out unilateral action against Pakistan for test-firing of the surface-to-surface missile Ghauri, stating that it was entirely Pakistan's indigenous effort. The US did not want to impose one-sided restrictions on Pakistan since it believed that the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) could not be applied against Pakistan alone.

1 dead, 50 hurt as storm hits Midnapore again
Even before Midnapore could begin convalescing from the effects of the tornado which left over 50 dead and hundreds injured last month, a fierce hailstorm accompanied by lightening lashed the Sabong block on Saturday affecting a large number of villages. The hailstorm destroyed over 300 mud huts, uprooted trees, communication lines, leaving over 50 people injured and one dead.
Tripura militants kill two, attack police outpost
Unidentified militants attacked a police outpost and torched houses and shops in simultaneous operations at Pitrabazar area in south Tripura district early on Sunday. The militant attack killed two persons, including a child.

Pak to probe bribe paid to Labour MP
The Pakistan Government has launched a probe into allegations that former premier Benazir Bhutto made payments to a Labour Member of Parliament, for lobbying for the country on the Kashmir issue in London. The money was alleged to have funded The East, a weekly Asian magazine.
Minister waters down stir threats; makes GWSSB services essential
In a bid to take the sting out of the proposed strike by employees of the Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), Water Supply Minister Narottam Patel on Saturday announced that the state government had declared GWSSB's services as "essential". The state government's move will also help in ensuring regular water supply to drought-prone villages.
