Munnani fears more blasts in TN

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, April 13: The State unit of the Hindu Munnani has appealed to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to take joint action with Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka to prevent further bomb blasts in Tamil Nadu. The blasts incident should be considered as a war waged against Tamil Nadu and its people and necessary action should be taken to stop its recurrence.

The Munnani apprehended that Muslim fundamentalists had stored explosive materials all over Tamil Nadu with plans to explode them simultaneously, and sought a CBI probe into the serial bomb blasts on February 14 at Coimbatore and the murder of ABVP functionary Paramasivam at Madurai on March 28.

A memorandum in this regard was presented to the Chief Minister when the Hindu Munnani State organiser Ramagopalan along with its state president Duraisankar and general secretary R Krishnamurthy and Thuglak Tamil magazine Editor Cho S Ramasamy called on Karunanidhi's residence on Monday. The meeting lasted nearly 45 minutes.

In its 19-point memorandum, theMunnani, besides asking the State government to check the growth of Islamic fundamentalism, demanded a detailed report on the action taken on the cases relating to the murder of Hindu movement leaders and cadres since 1984 and on the serial bomb blasts. It sought a special legislation to shoot at sight those who explode and possess bombs.

Besides an inquiry commission headed by a judge, hailing from outside Tamil Nadu, should be set up to probe how the explosives had been smuggled into the State and how they were stored. ``This type of probe is very essential for the security of the country,'' the memorandum said.

Among other things, the Hindu Munnani sought a legislation, on the lines of those in Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Arunachal Pradesh, to ban conversion of people from Hinduism to other religions; empowering police personnel to search temples, mosques and churches for any hidden explosive materials; and dropping of the proposal to establish a mechanised slaughter house at Ganapathypalayam inPollachi through private sector.

Later talking to mediapersons Ramagopalan said the Chief Minister gave a patient hearing to him and assured to look into the demands. The Munnani leader said he had also requested Karunanidhi and his family members to participate in this year's Vinayaka Chathurthi programme at Tiruvateeswaranpet in Triplicane on August 26.

It may be recalled that the Chief Minister, while reacting to the complaint that he had been attending the celebrations of only Muslim and Christian festivals, had said he was not averse to participating in the Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations and taking `kozhukottai', a sweetmeat made out of rice, coconut and jaggery.
