HYDERABAD, April 13: The United Front will hold a rally in the city on May 4 with secularism as the main focus to expose the BJP, Congress and the ``opportunistic politics'' played by the Telugu Desam Party in supporting the Vajpayee government at the Centre. This was announced at a joint press conference here today by CPI state unit secretary S Sudhakar Reddy, CPM state secretary B V Raghavulu and Janata Dal secretary N Narasimha Reddy. The venue for the meeting and the leaders who would participate in it would be decided soon, they said.
According to the Left leaders, the meeting has been convened to infuse confidence among the people that the UF would continue as an alternate force to the BJP and the Congress, the desertion by some parties like the TDP notwithstanding.
``It is a fact that the front has somewhat been weakened by the withdrawal of TDP and its support to the BJP. But we want to prove that the front and the secular values on which it was build still has relevance in current politics,''the leaders said. Stating that the rally was being organised by the UF partners, Sudhakar Reddy said all the ``anti-BJP and anti-Congress forces'' were welcome to participate. They have, however, not extended invitation to any parties for the rally.
The Communist leaders rejected the charge of TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu that the Left had come closer to the Congress in the post-poll scenario. ``The rally will prove that we treat both the BJP and Congress on an equal footing. We will also expose how the Telugu Desam betrayed the people's faith by aligning with communal forces,'' they said.
Meanwhile, the left parties and the Janata Dal alleged today that the BJP government's move to introduce a new version of the Prasar Bharati corporation was the ``first indication of its hidden agenda''.
``Attempts are being made by the BJP to stifle freedom and autonomy of the media after being a party to the unanimous decision on structure of Prasar Bharathi framed by the UF government,'' the state secretariesof CPI, CPM and Janata Dal said. They challenged Chandrababu Naidu to ``block the BJP government's unilateral move to change the complexion of the autonomous body''.
