Mitchell warns N Ireland deal may collapse
REUTERS
BELFAST, April 13: George Mitchell, chairman of the marathon talks that could offer lasting peace to Northern Ireland, issued a warning today that the delicate deal could collapse within 18 months. ``It will take a real effort to make this work,'' Mitchell said of Friday's accord that maintained the province's links with Britain but sought to build cross-border bridges with the Irish republic. ``Nobody can rule out the possibility that 18 months from now, if they can't get the Assembly to work, the whole process simply stops,'' the former US Senator told The London Times before flying home.Mitchell has warned that extremists on both sides of the sectarian divide could step up attacks in the weeks leading up to may 22 referendums being held on both sides of the Irish border to give the people's verdict on the historic deal. ``There are people on both sides who want to disrupt this process, who are committed to the way of violence. I expect they will step up their activities,'' he told the US NetworkABC News. Few believe the deal will silence all the gunmen -- especially those who have grown up in the shadow of bigotry on both sides of Northern Ireland's divided community.
