Centre to introduce environment as subject in schools, colleges

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 13: Union Forests and Environment minister, Suresh Prabhu said here today that from the next academic year, the Central government will introduce environment as a compulsory subject from class 1 to last year of graduation. Prabhu, who addressed a press conference at Shivalaya, the Shiv Sena office at Nariman Point, said the government would amend laws if necessary to introduce the subject. This is Prabhu's first visit to Mumbai after being appointment as a Cabinet minister.

``To create more environment and pollution awareness, it is necessary to change the citizens' attitude towards this subject. We have appointed a high level committee to prepare syllabus for the subject. The committee is expected to submit its report to the government soon after which the government will arrange for translation for the same into all Indian regional languages. Also, a meeting of education ministers from each state will be convened to explain the changes. A meeting of Vice-Chancellors of all universities inthe country will be called,'' he said. He said the results of the decision will be visible only after 7-8 years of introduction of the subject.
