Centre to introduce environment as subject in schools, colleges
Union forests and environment minister, Suresh Prabhu has said that from the next academic year, the Central government will introduce environment as a compulsory subject from class 1 to last year of graduation. Prabhu said the government would amend laws if necessary to introduce the subject.

Munnani fears more blasts in TN
The Tamil Nadu state unit of the Hindu Munnani has appealed to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to take joint action with Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka to prevent further bomb blasts in Tamil Nadu. The blasts incident should be considered as a war waged against Tamil Nadu and its people and necessary action should be taken to stop its recurrence.

Ban clamped on Kumbh processions
A ban has been clamped on the shahi-snan processions to be taken out by all 13 akharas on the Kumbh day today, under Section 144 of the CrPC. The extraordinary step, taken by the Kumbh Mela administration in view of the ultimatum given to it by the Akhil Bharatiya Akhra Parishad (ABAP) Sunday evening, is likely to create tension among the akharas.

Israel promises to make peace with neighbours
Israel may still make peace with its Palestinian neighbours, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, adding that he hoped it would come soon. "If Arafat accepts my offer to negotiate a permanent settlement, we could have a historic breakthrough," he told Newsweek magazine.

Mitchell warns N Ireland deal may collapse
George Mitchell, chairman of the marathon talks that could offer lasting peace to Northern Ireland, issued a warning yesterday that the delicate deal could collapse within 18 months. "It will take a real effort to make this work," Mitchell said of Friday's accord that maintained the province's links with Britain but sought to build cross-border bridges with the Irish republic.

Army bid to put howitzers atop tanks
The Army is to shortly commence, yet again, the summer trials for its decade-old requirement of self-propelled (SP) howitzers. For the first time, however, the testing is going to evaluate the performance of the SP gun turrets on an Arjun Main Battle Tank (MBT) chassis.
