Four governors quit after Advani's prod
Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna, Goa Governor T R Satishchandran, Mizoram Governor Arun Prosad Mukherjee and Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar I K Gupta yesterday resigned from their posts. A day after Home Minister L K Advani announced that governors' appointment during the caretaker government of I K Gujral would be reviewed.
Save Bengal front to fight polls on common symbol
All partners of the `bangla bachao front' (Save Bengal Front), led by Trinamool Congress, have agreed to fight the ensuing panchayat elections in West Bengal with a common symbol and a common programme. The front, including Samata party, Lokshakti and Muslim League, arrived at this decision at a meeting with the Trinamool Congress leadership.
Sonia meets DPCC leaders
All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi yesterday met senior Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) leaders to take stock of the situation in Delhi. The fight for the Delhi Pradesh president also intensified with the present president Choudhary Prem Singh claiming he was not to blame for the party's debacle in the Capital and his baiters seeking a change in view of the coming assembly elections.
UF rally to `expose' TDP's designs
The United Front will hold a rally in Hyderabad on May 4 with secularism as the main focus to expose the BJP, Congress and the "opportunistic politics" played by the Telugu Desam Party in supporting the Vajpayee government at the Centre. The venue for the meeting and the leaders who would participate in it would be decided soon.
Kalyan's Govt by appeasement
Besides his perennial problem of prods from allies for portfolio's in his jumbo ministry, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh is also getting deluged by problems from within the party cadre. The party cadre and ministers voiced their resentment for Kalyan's inaccessibility in the two-day soul-searching session of the BJP at Vrindavan recently.
Govt rapped for delay in Cong case
The Delhi high court has asked the Centre to furnish within three weeks Memoranda of Associations and Articles of Association of four overseas companies which donated Rs 3.75 crore to the Congress party during 1993-95 in alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Mahinder Narain and Justice SK Mahajan pulled up the FCRA cell under the Union home ministry for its indecision on registering a case in this regard.
