MUMBAI, April 18: Anita Rodrigues of Goa set a new Asian record in the hammer throw (over 50) in the 20th National Veterans Athletics Championship at the Dadoji Konddeo Stadium, Thane today.Rodrigues's throw of 26.68 metres broke the previous Asian record of 23.78 mts set by Wijayanti Suhardi of Indonesia in 1994. On her way to the Asian record, she also broke the national record of 20.60 mts set by Leela Goroi of Assam last year at Kanpur National.
Three new National records were also set today. In the women's over 35, international marathon runner Sunita Godara covered the 5 kms in 19:50.3 and broke the earlier record of 23:25.0 of C Allayamma from Kerala set in 1993.
In the men's hammer throw (over 40), Sahadev Yadav of Haryana bettered the earlier national record set by Narendra Kumar (Uttar Pradesh) of 47.24 mts with a throw of 49.85 metres at Kanpur (1997).
In the men's over 60 hammer, YP Malik of Haryana broke the national record (39.00 metres) set by Mohan Singh (Punjab) with an effort of40.36 mts set in 1997 at Kanpur. The runners-up, Mohan Singh bettered his performance with a throw of 39.15 mts. This was the only event where both the winner and runners-up positioned themselves ahead of the previous national record.
