MUMBAI, April 18: Tata Sports Club weathered a strong semi-final challenge from Companeroes on Friday night before making it to the final of the Bandra Gymkhana Open Rink hockey tournament.Winning a penalty shootout 9-7 after the scores stood 5-5 at full-time, Tatas clash with Jeeps, a Mahindras' subsidiary, in the final.
Jeeps made the grade with a facile 8-3 win over Young Sports in an encounter that fell way short of pace and excitement of the earlier last-four clash.
Trailing 0-3 at one stage, Tatas scored through Raju Bagade (2), Weldon Miranda (2) and Abraham Mathews in regulation time of a lively encounter.
Comapaneroes, looking good for a place in the final, led 5-3 towards the closing stages of the match after notching goals through Simon D'Souza (3), David Cardoza and Dudley Drego but Tatas drew level in a spirited burst as the minutes ticked away.
Scorers for Tatas in the penalty duel were: Blaise Monteiro, Raju Bagade, Amjad Khan and Weldon Miranda. Just Dudley Drego and SavioFernandes were on target for Companeroes.
With Gavin Ferreira and John Fernandes in their ranks, Jeeps had little difficulty in sweeping past their opponents. They led comfortably at 4-1 at half-time before strolling to victory over their exhausted opponents who came to the Gymkhana court after playing a BHA league match earlier in the evening.
Elton Menezes (3), Madan Vishwanath (2), John Fernandes, BN Madan and Lenny Soares found the net for Jeeps. Prakash Sakpal scored a hat-trick for the losers. Jeeps 'keeper Brian Fernandes excelled in goal to merit the Man of the Match Award.
Tatas sorely missing livewire playmaker, Enrico Fernandes, who is down with fever, were stretched to keep the rampaging Companeroes at bay.
They still enjoyed feeting moments at the outset but chances were spurned by Miranda who struck the post on one occassion while pushing wide on the other two.
Dudley Drego stunned Tatas with the lone strike of the first half and despite the efforts of Man of the Match Viren Rasquina,Amjad Khan, Raju Bagade, Miranda and the tireless Abraham Mathew the Companeroes citadel, manned by a shrewd Lucio Fernandes stood firm.
Tatas' resolve all but flagged as Companeroes bloated the advantage to 3-0 after Simon D'Souza and David Cardoz (penalty) in the early moments of the second half.
Miranda making amends for earlier lapses reduced the margin soon later with a deflection before Mathews narrowed it down to 2-3.
Simon D'Souza made it 4-2 for Companeroes from the spot in a matter of minutes but Tatas kept in touch with a penalty conversion by international Raju Bagade whose powerful flick beat Lucio.
Simon scored his third as Companeroes pulled away to what appeared to be a match-winning 5-3 lead but one reckoned without a spirited burst by Tatas.
Miranda notched his second as Tatas swarmed forward before another penalty gave Bagade a chance to take the contest to the penalty-stroke duel. Bagade made no mistake with anotyher fine flick to prolong the contest and bring goalkeepers Lucioand Brian D'Souza into focus. Lucio had saved a penalty taken from Amjad Khan in regulation time but this time around it was Brian D'Souza who enjoyed the greater success.
