SC dismisses Govt plea on Mysore palace

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, April 21: Heirs of the late Maharaja of the princely state of Mysore today won a major legal battle for possession and management of the Mysore palace, priceless antiques, including the golden throne, and all adjoining lands, when the Supreme Court dismissed a petition by the Karnataka Government challenging a High Court verdict putting them back in control of the property.

The Special Leave Petition of the state government was dismissed by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Madan Mohan Punchhi, Justice K T Thomas and Justice D P Wadhwa after hearing the Advocate General S Vijayashankar and counsel K R Nagaraja. Just before the court dismissed the petition, the AG told the judges that the government would not be able to give back the palace property as it was vested with a public character and public interest was involved.
