Mayor bill with panels

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 21: Revival of the Departmental Standing Committees is the highlight of the second Mumbai Mayor-In-Council Amendment Bill introduced in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly tonight.

The bill was introduced by Minister of State for Urban Development Ravindra Mane, in accordance with an assurance given by Chief Minister Manohar Joshi in Legislative Council last week during the passage of the first amendment bill. Joshi had assured the Council that a second amendment bill incorporating suggestions on which both ruling and opposition hadwoule be introduced in either House of Legislature. The original bill was criticised by opposition members for doing away with committee system.

The Mumbai Municipal Corporation (second amendment) Bill provides for reservation for the post of mayor, who will have wide financial and administrative powers in the mayor-in-council system.
