Rajkot faces baby boom

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
RAJKOT, April 21: Rajkot's population has increased tremendously over the last couple of years. The city's present population figure stands at 6,26,475 which is some 70,000 more than that seven years ago.

The city has also recorded a steep rise in birth rates. In 1990, the number of infants born was 19,468 against a death of 5,234 people. In 1991, it was 19,511 while the city registered death of 5,689 people. Similarly, in 1992, against the birth figure of 19813, the number of people who died that year was 5650. In the next year, total number of newborns was 19,360 while 6361 people died. In 1995, 20122 were born while the number of death stood at 5568. Next year saw the birth of 20653 babies while 6263 died. The 1997 records birth of 20969 against 6190 dying.

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation informs that deliveries still take place at homes. During this seven years, only 12 to 13 thousand babies were born at various hospitals which is less than 15 per cent of the total number of births in the city. These figures reveal some interesting aspects. For example, the average number of births are found to be more in January and February. Deaths seem to be more in August and September. However it must be remembered that the recorded increase in population was based only on estimation of birth and death entries recorded with RMC.
