  Astle, Cairns lead spirited Kiwi charge
Australia defeated New Zealand by five wickets in the Coca Cola Cup at Sharjah on Tuesday night. Adam Gilchrist finished the match with a boundary to take Australia to 261 for five wickets off 47.5 overs in reply to New Zealand's 259-5 from 50 overs.
  Xu Yuhua takes title with final round draw
Top seed Xu Yuhua of China tallied 8.5 points to win the title at the Asian Women Chess Championship and the coveted Grandmaster norm in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. In the final round, Yuhua drew with Lee Phyonglien (Vietnam), to annex the Indira Gandhi Trophy and a cash prize of $500.

Sampras in with chance
An all American clash between in-form Todd Martin and Andre Agassi will trigger a struggle for the world's number one spot at the Monte Carlo Open today. The winner of this mouth-watering first round clash will meet Pete Sampras for a second round tie which could help decide the battle as the men's court season gains momentum.
World Cup camp starts today
The Indian Hockey Federation has shortlisted 31 players for the first preparatory camp for the World Cup Hockey to be held in Utrecht, the Netherlands from May 20 to June 1. The camp, which begins in Delhi today will be highlighted by the presence of Dutch penalty corner expert Floris Bovelander.

Dravid, Bharadwaj grind UP
Skipper Rahul Dravid showed the way with a chanceless unbeaten double century as Uttar Pradesh struggled for the second day in a row of the Ranji Trophy final. When stumps were drawn for on the third day, Karnataka, overnight 284 for three to UP's first innings total of 134, extended their tally to 600 for six, with Dravid batting on 209, thus taking their lead to 466.
Agassi seeks divine help
Andre Agassi hopes a spiritual uplift from a lightning weekend visit to see the Shroud of Turin will serve him well in his first-round match against Todd Martin at the $ 2.45 million Monte Carlo Open. Agassi, practicing for his 1998 clay court debut at the Monte Carlo Country Club at the Mercedes Super 9 event, said that his desire to see the shroud, on limited display at the Cathedral in the northern Italian city, was overwhelming.
