Seeds sail through

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 22: Second seed Judy Walia won her fourth successive league encounter as all the seeds entered the quarter-final of the All India Ladies Snooker tournament at the Bombay Gymkhana today.

While both her earlier league encounters were stretched to three frames, Judy stamped her authority by winning the remaining two league encounters today in two frames.

In the morning session Judy had a fine break of 24 beating Sonal Mamoowalla 61-30, 74-18. In the afternoon, she got the better of Anjali Sengupta 83-10, 52-35.

All the other seeded players, top seed Heena Khandelwal, Ashwini Puranik (third seed) and Anjali Thakur also made it to the last four. Ritu Shrivatsava, Sangeeta Hemchand, Neeta Sanghvi and Meenal Bairagi also reached the last eight.

Heena beat Karnataka's Indira Hegde in the last league match today. She won 82-39, 53-40. ``So far it has been smooth sailing,'' said Heena after the match. Indira, who needed a win to make it to the last eight looked disappointed. ``I fouled on twooccasions. That upset my rhythm,'' said Indira.

Third seed Ashwini Puranik was stretched by Neeta Sanghvi in a thrilling encounter. Neeta came back strongly after losing the first frame 34-56. She took the second with comfortable ease (62-27). But in the last frame, Ashwini came with a sterling performance, managing a break of 23 and win the frame 79-19.

Neeta however booked her place for the knockout phase, beating rookie Namrata Mathur 70-25, 65-20 in the last league encounter.

Anuja Thakur had a break of 24 while beating Kamala Chandrababu 63-46, 58-14 to make it to the knockout phase.

The quarters and semi-finals will be played on Friday. Tomorrow is the rest day.
