Kolte guides Union Bank to title

MUMBAI, April 22: An unbeaten century by opener Ajit Kolte helped Union Bank to regain the Sir Benegal Ramarau Trophy, defeating hosts Reserve Bank by six wickets in the 45 overs final of the Inter-Bank Senior Division cricket tournament at the Wankhede Stadium, today.

Reserve Bank, after being put in to bat, were struggling at 82 for five at one stage. However the sixth-wicket pair of Yeshwant Bhosle and Sridhar Korgaonkar batted boldly to add 110 runs and helped their side to score 205 for six in the allotted overs.

Bhosle slammed 49 (51b, 5x4) while Korgaonkar struck a strokeful 73 (78b, 4x4, 4x6). Opener Shantanu Diwanji contributed 45.

Union Bank reached the target in 41.2 overs. Kolte was involved in an unbroken 75 runs partnership with Nilesh Bhosle (28) for the fifth wicket. Kolte was unbeaten on 100 (121b, 7x4, 4x6).

Brief scores: Reserve Bank 205-6 in 45 overs (Shantanu Diwanji 45, Yeshwant Bhosle 49, Sridhar Korgaonkar 73 n.o.) lost to Union Bank 208-4 (Ajit Kolte 100 n.o., Nilesh Bhosle 28n.o.).

Police `B' in semis

Police `B' became the first team to enter the semi-finals of the Bandra Gymkhana Open Amateur Volleyball tournament at the floodlit courts when they defeated a youthful Fr. Agnel's, Vashi 15-6, 15-8 here yesterday.

Pradip Kumar and KM Narayan were in good form as Mythiri Samskarika Vedi, Dombivli won 15-8, 15-8 against Champion Youth Club, Chembur. Mythiri move into the quarter-finals where they meet hosts Bandra Gymkhana `A'.

Barnes brothers Vincent and Velentine combined well, as Spotlights Sports Club (Red) registered a convincing 15-1, 15-5 win over Bandra Gymkhana `B'.
