Police set up a crack team

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 22: Though a special team has been formed to investigate film producer Vijay Sippy's mysterious fall to death from his 17th-floor Napean sea Road flat on Saturday, senior officers said the delay in receiving the post-mortem report may hamper investigations.

Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Param Bir Singh today confirmed that a special squad - comprising a DCP, an assistant commissioner of police and two senior inspectors - had been formed to go into the circumstances which led to Sippy's death. But, the post-mortem report, which senior officers claim holds the key to the mystery, may take a few more weeks to arrive.

Malabar Hill senior police inspector Dharyasingh Bhosale said: ``The matter is being pursued with utmost urgency,'' adding that ``there are a few thousand cases pending in the Coroner's Court and a significant number are added each day.''

Investigating officers, however, said with each day's delay their job was becoming more and more difficult. ``The report willindicate the time of death and other details like whether there was an injury in the neck region indicating strangulation. The examination of the viscera may reveal whether he was poisoned,'' explained an officer and added that this would give the investigations a definite line.

However, a forensic expert requesting anonymity said that doctors generally inform the police about their findings orally soon after the post-mortem and send the detailed report later. ``It's strange that the police still know nothing about it,'' he said.

Meanwhile, another officer confirmed that so far the police had not found any concrete evidence in support of its murder theory. None of the servants from the Sippy household are missing, nor have any valuables been stolen. Also, so far the police have not stumbled upon any tell-tale signs of struggle in or outside the Sippys' flat.
