Lawyers protest "assault" by policemen

NEW DELHI, April 22: Lawyers at the Patiala House Courts went on a strike today, protesting against the alleged assault on a lawyer by a sub-inspector and a constable at Nizamuddin Police Station.

The New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) claims that the advocate, V.P. Gautam, was illegally detained inside the police station for more than six hours on April 15.

Gautam is believed to a have entered into an altercation with some local hoodlums in a restaurant opposite the police station. Following this, he was taken to the police station and detained till 1.30 am where he is alleged to have been assaulted.He was released only after Mohinder Singh Saini, president of NDBA reached the police station and intervened.

Gautam was later taken to a nearby hospital and treated for his wounds. Though the erring sub-inspector and the constable have been reportedly transferred and are facing a vigilance inquiry, the NDBA says that it has not received any communication from the police in this regard.

The associationtoday wrote to Police Commissioner T R Kakkar about the incident, and requested him to personally intervene look into the matter.

Karan Singh, secretary of NDBA, says that if the sub-inspector and the constable are not suspended, lawyers in the Capital will intensify their agitation.
