NEW DELHI, April 22: The union government is examining possibilities of installing a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at an alternative site, other than the one near India Gate, which would require the breaking of the canopy.A division bench, comprising Justices Y K Sabharwal and C K Mahajan, after going through an affidavit filed by the Ministry of Urban Development posted the hearing to August 10.The centre today sought three months time from the Court to decide the controversy pertaining to a proposal to install Mahatma Gandhi's statue by removing the canopy opposite India Gate.
The bench was hearing a petition opposing the demolition of the canopy for installation of the statue. ``Keeping in consideration the views received from different quarters, the Union Government is now examining the possibility of installing the statue at a suitable site apart from those already under consideration of Urban Development Ministry,'' standing counsel A.K. Vali submitted before the bench.
The petition filed by Conservation Society of Delhi (CSD) had said that demolition of the canopy would harm the architectural splendour of the Rajpath and had suggested that the statue could be installed in the central Rajpath axis around the India Gate.
