All coalition partners must speak as one, says Venkaiah

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VISAKHAPATNAM, April 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party's allies must sort out contentious issues among themselves instead of airing their grievances in public, BJP national general secretary Venkaiah Naidu said here today.

``People would not like the coalition partners to speak in different tones, he said when asked to comment on Union Minister Ramakrishna Hegde's outbursts against AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha. He however sidestepped direct questions on whether it was wrong on Hegde's part to have aired his views in public.

Venkaiah said there was no question of the BJP either diluting or deviating from its agenda. The mandate of the people was in favour of a coalition led by the BJP -- a ``spirit which the party understood'' -- leading to the formation of a government based on the national agenda, he added.

Replying to a question, the BJP national general secretary said issues on which there was no consensus would ``not be forced'' on the allies. The party had not given up these issues but had kept them incold storage until the right time -- when the party got an absolute majority -- he clarified. He said the BJP had no intention of belittling the coalition partners but said it was ``wrong'' to achieve something through threats of destabilisation. Venkaiah said the bills necessary for implementing the pre-election promises made by the party would be introduced in the budget session of Parliament. A bill to remove restrictions on movement of foodgrains within the country was also on the anvil, he said.

He said a Constitutional Review Committee had been formed to elicit the opinions of various sections of the public on issues like the role of Governors, devolution of more powers to state and local bodies and the complexities resulting from a hung Parliament.
