Khurana allays fears on DMK Govt's dismissal

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KOCHI, April 24: Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Madan Lal Khurana has affirmed that the BJP would not yield to pressure from any of its allies for the dismissal of the Karunanidhi Government in Tamil Nadu.

At a news conference organised by the Ernakulam Press Club here on Thursday, Khurana said he did not think that AIADMK leader Jayalalitha would withdraw the support of her party to the Vajpayee Government on this or any other issue raised by her.

He declined to comment on the view expressed by his Cabinet colleague Ram Jethmalani that the Vaypayee Government would survive even without Jayalalitha's support.

Khurana allayed apprehensions about the stability of the Government saying that all internal problems would be resolved by the co-ordination committee formed by the partners of the ruling alliance.

He said the BJP could have spared itself of the problems (from some of its allies) had it got a comfortable majority in Parliament. But the party did not get the number of seats it hadexpected in Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Even then, in view of the inability and reluctance of the Congress and the United Front to form a government after the elections, the BJP, being the largest party, had to shoulder the responsibility of forming the Government with the support of some post-poll allies.

He said that in a coalition, it is bound to take some time for its allies to get adjusted to each other and to have uniform thinking on diverse issues.

He gave many reasons for his optimism that the Vajpayee Government would survive. Unlike the prime ministers of the United Front, the present Government has a leader (Vajpayee) who is widely known in the country and who enjoys the confidence of the people as proved by various surveys conducted prior to the election. Secondly, the pyramidal structure of the ruling front is founded on a strong base provided by the BJP which could absorb the onslaughts on its superstructure.

Moreover, a midterm poll is the only option in the event of the collapse of theBJP-led Government which no MP in the Lok Sabha would like to face. He said the results of the elections to Patna and Udhampur seats held after the formation of the BJP Government reaffirmed the people's strong desire for a stable Government, which only the BJP could provide in the given circumstances. He claimed that the BJP would win the forthcoming bypoll in Mandi as well.

``Three things are needed for the success of a Government policies and programmes, political will and an able leadership. We have all the three and, hence, are bound to succeed,'' Khurana said.

He said Karunanidhi's statement in the Assembly on Wednesday that he had full faith in Vajpayee and that he was willing to sacrifice his Government for the sake of survival of the BJP Government should further cause schism in the United Front, which has already become a divided front.
