Army to blame for death during Calcutta show

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CALCUTTA, April 24: The West Bengal government today blamed the army for the death of a man during the `pyrotechnic show' held by the Eastern Command at the end of its regatta championship at Bengal Rowing Club, state Environment Minister Manab Mukherjee said.

``The army used such fireworks on Sunday recklessly in their own responsibility and the state government cannot defend the army,'' the minister said. ``Such fireworks are made in ordnance factories and are used for war purposes and not for display,'' he added. The army used the fireworks even though club authorities and the Imam of a nearby mosque protested, he alleged, adding that the government would send the Pollution Control Board (PCB) report to the Green bench of Calcutta High Court.

The PCB report said the organisers of the show had not taken permission from the police or the PCB for holding the display.
