Motor loan drives away report slogans

ENS & PTI
MUMBAI, April 24: The demand for tabling of Srikrishna Commission report in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today took a back seat when Chief Minister Manohar Joshi took `interest' in Legislators' welfare.

This was clear when slogan-shouting Samajwadi Party, Left and some Congress members, who were demanding tabling of the report, were persuaded by Leader of Opposition Madhukar Pichad to take their seats as Chief Minister Manohar Joshi announced grant of Rs five lakh interest-free loans to members to purchase four wheelers. Earlier, Girish Bapat (BJP), raising a point of propriety, sought to know from the government whether it would provide loans to members of the House to purchase four wheelers to keep contact with people in their constituencies.

Joshi said he would answer only if the slogan-shouting stopped. Speaker Dattaji Nalawade told Pichad to pacify demonstrating members. After Pichad had done so, Joshi said that the cabinet had decided to get a loan of Rs five lakh from banks on 10 per centinterest which the government would bear. He said legislators were demanding a loan of Rs eight lakh, but the cabinet decided the loan amount would be Rs five lakh.

The announcement was received warmly by the entire House, which had witnessed chaos on the Srikrishna report for the last four days, save two or three voices which were heard saying ``give report, not motor.''
