Waterworld: Pipe burst causes flood

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 24: A 1,600 mm diameter pipe originating at the Malabar Hill reservoir burst at E Moses Road at Worli on Friday flooding the area around the Mahalaxmi Race Course including Tulsi Pipeline Road. Water rose up to nine inches, badly affecting traffic. However, after a few hours civic workers were able to bring the situation under control.

The reason for the burst has not been ascertained by officials of the civic water works department, who informed that detection of the fault will take some time. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had announced a 25 per cent cut in water supply in wards A, C, D and parts of E ward on Saturday.

Meanwhile, water supply all over the city was cut by another five per cent from Friday following irregular supply of power from the Maharashtra State Electricity Board. A spokesperson for the BMC informed that the corporation was not receiving adequate supply of power to draw water from Pise Panjrapore reservoir and transport it to Mumbai. However, he could not sayhow long the cut will be imposed.
