Robbers nab infant, jewels from Mira Rd

Ashish Wagh
MUMBAI, April 24: Robbers kidnapped a 21-month-old boy and made off with jewellery worth Rs 40,000 in Mira Road (East) while the menfolk including the watchman in the building were away in the mosque for the Friday prayers.

Two unidentified persons barged into Central Railway employee Akhtar Kadri Romi's flat in Laxmi Tower, Puja Nagar, Mira Road (E) at 2.30 pm when his wife Meher was alone. To gain entry inside they mentioned names of close relatives and Romi's friends. They said that one of them wanted a job in the Central Railways and wanted Akhtar's help.

Once inside, they brandished a knife and asked Meher to hand over all the ornaments and cash in the house. They also asked her to open the cupboard but did not find anything of value.

Meher was stabbed when she tried to shout for help. The robbers then took away her son Azmat saying that they would return the boy later if she did not inform the police adding that they would call.

M S Lohia, DSP, Vasai division said, ``This could be the handiworkof somebody close to Akhtar Romi."
