April 24: Young Sports overcame a spirited fight from Union Bank to emerge 5-3 winners via the tie-breaker of the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-op Bank Ltd-sponsored Guru Nanak Devji Hockey Tournament at the Khalsa college ground, on Friday.Young Sports took an early lead when Dutta Shinde converted a penalty stroke in the 8th minute. Union Bank drew level in the 33rd minute through Rajesh Matkari, who also gave them the lead with a 57th minute goal. Young Sports equalised through SK Sawant's penalty corner conversion.
In the tie-breaker only Stanley Thomas was successful for Union Bank while Mangesh Mahale, SK Sawant and Dipak scored for Young Sport.
In the second match of the day, Mumbai Port Trust blanked Greater Mumbai Police 4-0. Mumtaz Ahmed scored two goals (34th & 55th minutes) while Digvijay (49th) and Abhijit Shirsat (69th) got the other two goals.
Jai Taramani in final
Jai Taramani Youth Club, Goregaon and Police A will clash in the final of the Bandra Gymkhana Open Amateur VolleyballTournament. In the semi-finals, Jai Taramani scored a thrilling five-set victory over Police B 9-15, 15-17, 15-9, 15-9, 15-12 in a match that lasted over two hours. In the second semi-finals, Police A were made to sweat only in the first set which they won 15-9 before running out easy winners 15-2, 15-4 in the remaining two sets.
Anup Anchan was the hero in Jai Taramani's splendid resurgence after his team had lost the opening two sets. His blocks and smashes brooked no reply from Police B players. Anchan got good support from Wilson D'Silva and Nelson D'Silva.
