Central observer confident of early end to BJP-Mamata rift

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CALCUTTA, April 27: Claiming that the BJP-Trinamool alliance in the state was not jeopardised, Kailashpati Mishra, the Central BJP observer, said today that he was optimistic about finalising seat-adjustment with the Trinamool Congress in the Panchayat elections.

Mishra who arrived in the city here this afternoon to mediate between the two parties in the state said, ``Only a genuine willingness on the part of the State BJP and Trinamool Congress could stand the allies in good stead, and it would be done.''

Mishra's visit assumed importance as he is widely believed to be carrying a message from the senior BJP leaders, particularly L K Advani, for the State BJP leaders, after Mamata Banerjee threatened to call off the pact alleging `slander campaign against her and her party by the state BJP president Tapan Sikdar.' Mishra, however, refused to admit that there was any strain in the alliance. He said for the Panchayat elections, more time was needed for thrashing out the contentious issues. `` Mishra said hesaw no reasons why the talks could not be resumed as ``the issue is not over Chief Minister's post.''

Incidentally, the alliance appeared to have reached a dead end since the statements and counter-statements by the leaders of both the parties, finally culminating into Mamata's threat to call off the pact last week.
