Punjab opposes UP district in Uttaranchal

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CHANDIGARH, April 28: Punjab has opposed inclusion of Shahid Udham Singh Nagar (Rudrapur in Nainital) in Uttar Pradesh in the proposed new state of Uttaranchal.

Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal took up this issue with Prime Minister A B Vajpayee yesterday when he visited Amritsar to pay his obeisance at the holy shrines there, officials said.

Earlier, the party's Political Affairs Committee held a meeting at Amritsar and formally adopted a resolution expressing concern over the move and said the consent not only of Sikhs but also other people in the area be taken before merging the district in the new State.
